The Best Houseplants for You and Your Pets

There’s a saying that goes, “Plant Lady is the New Cat Lady.” Why not embrace both? As a devoted cat lover who has recently discovered a love for indoor greenery, I’ve found a way to indulge in both my passions by carefully selecting non-toxic plants for my home.

There are many popular houseplants that are non-toxic to both cats and dogs. My collection of pet-safe plants continues to grow, and here are a few of my current favorites:

Maranta or Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura)

  • Safe for dogs

  • Indirect sunlight, partial shade
  • Frequent watering, keep soil moist

The Maranta, also known as the Prayer Plant, features bold, tropical foliage and thrives in low light with frequent watering. Its visual appeal makes it a great addition to any bohemian-style home.

Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exalta bostoniensis)

  • Frequent watering / keep soil moist

The Boston Fern is a lush, low-maintenance option that can grow quite large indoors. Its adaptability and decorative value make it a great choice for various interior design styles.

 Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

  • Safe for cats*
  • Indirect sunlight
  • Semi-frequent watering / water when soil is dry

The Spider Plant is a low-maintenance, non-toxic option with a unique charm. It comes in green and white-striped varieties, making it a versatile addition to any home.

*While non-toxic, spider plants contain mild hallucinogenic properties, similar to catnip. They should be kept out of reach of pets to avoid ingestion.

Air Plant (Tillandsia)
